Birth doula supporting a pregnant person

The goal is to find the right fit: of personality, experience, and vibe. Studies show that having a birth doula is linked to better birth outcomes, less anxiety, and stress for the birth parents. However, you will want to make sure that you can feel at ease with your doula when the time comes. Here are the top 10 questions to ask a doula to help you narrow down your decision.

  1. What is your training and certification?

Understanding a doula’s training and certification helps you gauge their level of expertise and experience. Look for doulas who have completed recognized training programs and hold certifications from reputable organizations.

  1. How many births have you attended?

Experience matters when it comes to childbirth. A doula with a wealth of experience can provide valuable insights and support during labor. However,  don’t be afraid if the doula has less experience, or has not given birth themselves, they can be more objective when it comes to caring for you.

  1. What services do you offer before, during, and after labor?

Most birth  support packages come with two prenatal visits and one postpartum visit. You’ll want to ask what will be discussed in the prenatal visits and how soon after birth will they come for the postpartum visit.

  1. How do you support the birthing person and their partner during labor?

Inquire about the specific techniques and methods the doula uses to provide emotional and physical support. Also ask about them  giving your partner tips for labouring at home and how they support your partner in supporting you!

  1. Can you explain your philosophy on childbirth?

Every doula has a unique philosophy regarding childbirth. Understanding their beliefs about the birthing process can help you determine if their approach aligns with your own values.

  1. How do you handle complications or emergency situations during labor?

While most births go smoothly, it’s essential to know how a doula responds to complications or emergencies. Ask about their experience in such situations and how they collaborate with medical staff to ensure the safety of both the birthing person and the baby.

  1. Can you help make a birth plan/can we go over my birth plan?

Writing a birth plan can feel daunting, especially if it’s your first time. Your doula should respect and support your birth plan. Discussing your preferences upfront will help you determine if the doula is willing to advocate for your choices during labor.

  1. How do you collaborate with medical staff?

A well rounded doula works in harmony with medical professionals. Ask how they communicate and collaborate with doctors and nurses to ensure a cohesive support system during your birth.

  1. What are your fees and what do they include?

You will want a detailed breakdown of their fees and services. For example, when do they do their prenatal visits and how long do they last? Some doulas offer these visits virtually on in- person. You will also want to know when the doula joins you once you are in labor. Finally, you will want to know if there are any postpartum visits outside of the delivery and how soon those occur postpartum.

  1. Can you provide references from previous clients?

It is always helpful to ask for references, past clients can give you a personal account of working with their doula.
